All Around Town

One Smile at a Time

Operation Seniors serves three different senior groups in our community: a low-income retirement residence, an assisted living residence and the Grandparents Support Network. Our goal is to enrich each and every senior’s life in a thoughtful and joyous manner.

AHEPA

AHEPA is an acronym for the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association, an organization founded in 1922 which provides 95 apartment communities in 21 states.
Our chapter has been involved in Wilmington’s 50 unit community for low income seniors for many years. Residents look forward to their monthly bingo games, always with prizes, and ice cream delivered to each apartment. Holidays bring a special touch of caring with cookie boxes, poinsettias and individual cards. Our ukulele group will serenade residents with a holiday concert, followed by a pizza and ice cream party. We welcomed members of the choir from a local church for a holiday sing-along with eggnog and pumpkin bread.
A Southern Social held in spring brings residents to the dining room with a meal, sponsored and crafted by our members.
Clothing from the Thrift Shop is offered quarterly, and residents are thrilled with the selection to update or add to their closets.
The greatest reward is seeing the smiles and hearing the laughter and thanks that each and every resident gives back to us.

Spring Arbor

Spring Arbor Assisted Living is located in Wilmington and can accommodate about 50 residents at its capacity.  They also have a memory care unit.  It is our pleasure to help enrich their lives through bingo games (with prizes!), various musical events and parties with music, games and gifts.  We also make handmade notecards for many of the holidays during the year.

Grandparents Raising Grandchildren

The Grandparents Support Network, which is run out of the Lower Cape Fear YWCA in Wilmington, is the third group that we support.  These grandparents have taken over the role of raising their grandchildren. Our goal is to make the grandparents feel appreciated and to help support them where there is an unfulfilled need.  We have baked treats and provided holiday and spring food baskets.  We also are fulfilling the need for household supplies such as paper goods, cleaners and laundry needs.  Furthermore, we pick up and deliver 30 lb. boxes of food once a month from the Food Bank for qualifying grandparents. Lastly, we have started an exciting Life Stories program where grandparents are interviewed about their lives.  We then put together a book with pictures for them to keep and share with their families.
