The Assistance League®, founded in California, is the first nonprofit, nonpolitical, and nonsectarian organization to recognize the power of volunteers in helping those less fortunate achieve a better, more meaningful life. The first chapter was established in Los Angeles in 1919. As the surrounding communities grew, additional chapters were formed. To support this expansion, National Assistance League was organized in 1936 and later incorporated in 1949.
From these modest beginnings, Assistance League has grown into a nationwide organization with nearly 100 chapters and more than 23,000 members across the United States.
Locally, Assistance League® of Fresno administers a variety of philanthropic programs throughout Fresno County. Since its affiliation as a guild of National Assistance League in May 1988, the organization has expanded to include six programs and one auxiliary.
The chapter’s first program, Operation Bear Hug, was established in 1988. It provides certified-safe teddy bears to the Fresno/Clovis Police and Sheriff’s Departments, as well as other agencies, for distribution to individuals who have experienced trauma.
In 1989, Teen Club was formed. With the chapter’s official chartering on March 17, 1994, Teen Club became recognized as Assisteens®. This auxiliary empowers teens to engage in philanthropic work and fundraising while developing personal growth and college readiness skills.
Operation School Bell®, the chapter’s second program, began in fall 1990. It provides essential clothing to children who might otherwise be unable to attend school. In addition, the program supports literacy, health, and basic needs by supplying food and school materials. This year, the program is projected to serve over 10,000 recipients.
To help sustain these efforts, the chapter opened its resale store, now known as AL Thrift Boutique, in spring 2001. The store generates vital revenue to support ongoing programs.
Operation Gift Box, launched in 2005, delivers thoughtfully prepared gift boxes to homebound seniors, offering comfort and connection.
In 2012, Dream Dress became the chapter’s fourth program, providing formal attire to girls who are homeless, in foster care, or otherwise in need. These dresses allow them to participate in important school events such as dances and graduations.
The following year, Busy Hands was introduced. In this program, local seniors create handcrafted items that are donated to organizations such as the Marjaree Mason Center and the Pregnancy Care Center. This initiative is especially meaningful, as it benefits both the individuals who create the items and those who receive them.
In addition, Community Outreach addresses short-term needs within the community by providing immediate assistance and essential goods.
Over the years, Assistance League of Fresno has grown not only in size but also in the depth of its impact. It continues to play a vital role in strengthening the community through volunteerism and service.
Assistance League of Fresno is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. All donations are tax-deductible. The organization’s Federal Tax ID number is 77-0202024.
