Operation School Bell®

Operation School Bell is a signature program of Assistance League® and all of its chapters.  It was initiated in 1955 when a volunteer saw children sharing clothes and sought to provide new clothing to those in need.
In 1997 it became a national program for all chapters and the name and logo were trademarked.  The program has grown significantly over the years providing both clothing and support to over 4 million schoolchildren.
Our chapter has been providing Operation School Bell programs for over 25 years to our surrounding community.  Today these programs focus on school clothing, emergency clothing for essential needs, literacy support for students, and vision care for students.

With our Emergency Clothing program, area schools are stocked with school-appropriate clothing including sweatpants, sweatshirts, tee shirts, gym shorts, and underwear. Students who may have an “accident” at school will now have a change of clothing.  They can continue with their instructional day.
The School Clothing program provides far more than just a new wardrobe. It allows schoolchildren to fit in better with their peers and empowers them to reach their potential. For some children, this will be the first time they have had a new pair of shoes, a warm coat, or an item of clothing that is not a hand-me-down.  New clothing has the potential to boost self-esteem, encourage school attendance, and improve academic performance.
Literacy is critical to a child’s educational success.  Our Reading for Life program gives age-appropriate new books to students in low-income schools to promote literacy and help students to build a home library. Our Reading for All program provides gently used books to various agencies in our community to encourage literacy at home. Member volunteers work with students in the classroom to improve their reading and comprehension skills through our Volunteers for Classrooms program.
Through our Vision for the Future program in collaboration with our vision care partners, we provide eye exams and eyeglasses for students in need. The students benefit from improved academic performance, increased self-esteem and a new view of the world around them.

Our Volunteers

Our Operation School Bell Clothing Shopping events at Target and JCPenney are the highlight of our volunteer activities.  Volunteers gather to help the students and their families shop for new school clothing.  Many times this is the first time a student has been able to pick out their very own new clothing.
One teacher told us a cute story where one of her students came to school proudly wearing his new clothing with the size stickers still attached on his new clothing.  He wanted everyone to know that he was wearing brand new clothing.

Our volunteers are happy to help the 75 up to 150 shoppers that come to each evening’s shopping events.
The extraordinary support from JCPenney in Thousand Oaks and the Target stores in Moorpark and Simi Valley helps us achieve program shopping. Together, we are making a difference in the lives of numerous children.
Students accompany their parents or guardians so that they may have the experience of shopping and selecting their new clothing for school.

Our Operation School Bell Clothing Shopping Nights truly “takes a village” to execute from working with the school district administrators to our store partners and their staff, and the cadre of volunteers needed to make this a smooth and enjoyable night for all including the volunteers and the families who are shopping.  We were pleased to have a visit from our Assistance League® National Executive Director, Judy Zulfiqar (second from left) at one of our shopping events.
