Who We Are

Assistance League of Los Altos is one of more than 80 chapters of Assistance League®. We are an all-volunteer, 501(c)(3) nonprofit, nonsectarian service organization that puts caring and commitment into action through our philanthropic programs in Santa Clara County. We fund our programs through grants, generous donations from our community, membership and special events. We operate several philanthropic programs aimed at enriching the lives of children and families. Member volunteers are dedicated to ongoing support and a long-term presence in the community through hands on involvement and innovative philanthropic programs.

What We Do

Our mission is to improve lives through local philanthropic programs we operate in Santa Clara County. We provide essential goods and services to low-income new mothers and their newborn infants, underserved school-age children and their families, as well as children in medical crisis. Through these programs, we hope not only to enrich people’s lives but also to help them flourish.

Our chapter has two philanthropic program categories: Community Needs and Operation School Bell®.  Our Community Needs program provides Baby Bundles for newborns, their mothers and families through our partnership with the County of Santa Clara Public Health Department and with El Camino Health Women’s Specialty Unit.  Our Operation School Bell program serves mainly Title 1 students from elementary through high school in Los Altos, Mountain View, Palo Alto and Sunnyvale.

Assisteens®

Assisteens®

Assisteens is an auxiliary of Assistance League of Los Altos. It is comprised of 7th through 12th grade students from local public and private schools who engage in volunteer activities and philanthropic projects throughout Santa Clara County. The goal of the program is for Assisteens to develop a sense of community awareness, self-reliance, personal responsibility, fundraising and leadership skills through guided activities. Some of these activities may include participating in the holiday shopping program for low-income families referred by the County Public Health Nurses, working on projects for homeless shelters, making crafts or playing Bingo with residents of local assisted living communities.

National Organization

Assistance League is part of the first wave of nonprofit organizations in the United States that empowers ordinary citizens to improve communities and transform lives through long-term volunteerism.

Organized as a national nonprofit in 1935, Assistance League’s roots date back to the turn of twentieth century America when founder, Anne Banning, pioneered a tradition of compassion and benevolence carried on by her modern-day counterparts in Assistance League chapters around the country.

Today, National Assistance League has over 80 chapters nationwide united in purpose and dedicated to strengthening communities.
