Food Programs Help Alleviate Childhood Hunger

No Child Should Be Hungry in America

The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates that one of every five children in America today does not have consistent access to adequate food. Food insecure children may receive nutritious breakfasts and lunches during the school week, but they often lack proper nourishment on weekends.

Assistance League chapters are working to fill this gap by:

  • Inviting families to “shop” at weekend food pantries
  • Sending home Friday backpacks with healthy non-perishables

These efforts ensure school kids can have more of the nutrition they need to:

  • Succeed in school and life
  • Maintain better overall health
  • Experience normal growth and development

Together, we can fight childhood hunger and give every child a chance to thrive.
